Gaby Philippi - Remix as a creative platform

There is a popular website called hotnewhiphop.com that provides anyone with a computer the latest hip-hop songs, remixes, news, mixtapes, and videos, which is updated daily. About 40% of the time when visiting this site, the list of "new" music consists of remixed songs of which the original had come out weeks or months prior.

You can see clearly that the majority of the songs listed are "remixed" versions of the original. Some would say these songs are just recycled or reused pieces of work and some even become frustrated and annoyed of the constant same-song repetition. I've also heard music appreciators voice that the reuse of original work is just laziness and illustrates that person's lack of creativity. In my opinion, however, I believe that not only do these remixes show creativity, but it provides a new way of listening to and enjoying that particular song. Yes, the person creating the remix is taking the original copy or parts of and making a new product, but it has new tempos, tones, and beats which in turn presents a fresher viewing. I often get excited when I see new versions of a song I had already liked so much. It gives me a chance to enjoy it all over again, but in a some what different light. For example, there is a popular hip-hop/R&B song called Marvin's Room which was recreated by several well known artists including Lil Wayne, Drake, Jojo, Chris Brown, and others.

This song was kept alive for so long and thoroughly enjoyed by many because of all these popular artists putting their own twist on it. You would hear things like, "Drake's version is by far my favorite." The song continued to gain interest by it's constant rebirth. This is a great example of how a song that is reused and remixed is a good thing.
